Game Friends,
A montage: It’s familiar scenes from Sunday Game Night. It’s the brilliant play you pulled off in Castles of Burgundy, it’s the hilarious answer you wrote in Loaded Questions, it’s the perfectly esoteric clue you gave in Dixit. It’s the time Jack misheard “porn” as “corn”. It’s the time a bird got stuck in our apartment and we had to spend half an hour chasing it out. It’s the dish you brought to share and everyone told you how delicious it was. It’s your ship falling apart in Galaxy Trucker. It’s a warm glow of food, and drinks, and friends, and board games.
And then, a minor chord. It’s pushing pieces around a board, in the dark, by yourself. Pages flip off the calendar: July, you start to frown, August, September, tears are streaming down your face, October, you’re fetal in your pajamas on the floor, the calendar lands on November. Suddenly every screen you own lights up and reads: SUNDAY GAME NIGHT RESUMES THIS SUNDAY AT 5PM AT NATHAN’S APARTMENT, BRING A FOOD OR A DRINK TO SHARE. And everything is OK again.
