Dear Annie,

I was recently invited to a party where I was indicated as part of the advertisement for people to come to the party. Or perhaps to warn them to stay away. Either way, the invite informed me that I was going to be at the events. These are regular events, but RSVPs are politely requested, to ensure proper preparations of course. So I was just wondering, what is the protocol on RSVPing when the host declares that you will be coming? It seems redundant to say, ‘Why of course I’m attending.’ The host would simply respond. Well DUH. And I would feel silly. But to not reply seems impolite. So please, dearest Annie, I’m at a loss. What advice do you have?

Sincerely,
The inevitable gamer.

Dear Inevitable,

How lucky you are to be in such demand at social functions! Proper etiquette requires that you RSVP, even though your host has already used your name to entice additional guests at their function. It might help to remember that RSVP stands for répondez, s’il vous plaît (please respond), which means that you can respond in either the positive; “I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be in attendance!” or in the negative; “I regret to inform you that I can not attend.” Common usage today has begun (incorrectly) to use RSVP to assume the positive, i.e. that those who RSVP will only be those who plan to attend the event and those who can not will simply fail to RSVP. So respond to your host how ever you chose, secure in the knowledge that you have fulfilled your obligations. Should you choose to attend, I look forward to seeing you!!!

Yours,
~ “Annie”
